Children’s vision at Clear & Company

Caring for kids’ eyes is a passion here

At Clear & Company Eye Care, caring for children’s eyes is more than part of our practice, it’s truly a passion. There’s nothing quite like the moment when a child sees the world more clearly, whether it’s recognizing letters on a page, spotting the ball on the field, or simply feeling confident in the classroom.

Because vision plays such an important role in learning and development, we approach every exam with care while keeping the experience comfortable, welcoming, and child-friendly. Our pediatric eye exams are designed to be gentle and thorough, using advanced technology to look far beyond the basics of a school screening.

Why a comprehensive eye exam matters

Kids do not always know they cannot see well

Children often don’t tell us they’re having trouble seeing, because they believe what they see is what everyone else sees.

Screenings miss important skills

School screenings mainly measure distance vision and can miss subtle but important visual skills that affect reading, attention, focus, and how the eyes work together.

Early detection supports development

Catching vision issues early makes treatment more effective and supports healthy eye development. Clear vision builds confidence, supports learning, and helps kids thrive.

We evaluate

We check more than clarity

A full pediatric eye exam looks at how your child’s eyes are functioning, not just what they can read on an eye chart.

What to expect during your child’s first eye exam

What to expect, made easy

We personalize the experience

Whether your child is shy or full of energy, we adapt to meet them where they are.

Kid-friendly testing

Your child doesn’t need to read or even speak for us to get meaningful results. We use age-appropriate tools, symbols, shapes, and interactive games that make the visit feel more like play than a test.

Dilating drops, when needed

If drops are necessary, we explain everything in a calm, kid-friendly way so it feels less intimidating.

We keep it positive

If it helps your child feel at ease, we’ll lean into fun. A favorite show, a few jokes, and a warm approach can make a big difference.

What to expect at every age

Eye exams by age

Infants (6–12 months)

Vision develops rapidly in the first year, and healthy eyes can still have underlying issues — many of which aren’t always detected during routine wellness visits. Through the InfantSEE® program, we offer a comprehensive eye assessment at no cost for infants between 6 and 12 months of age.

We check for:

  • Eye movement and coordination
  • Overall eye health and development
  • Proper pupil response to light
  • If your child needs glasses

Why it matters:

Many vision issues are easiest to correct when caught early. A quick visit now could make all the difference later.

Preschoolers (ages 2–5)
Visual skills like depth perception, eye-hand coordination, focusing, and tracking develop quickly in these years. A comprehensive eye exam helps ensure development is on track, especially since amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye turn) can begin to appear and is highly treatable when detected early.

What the visit looks like:

  • Picture-based charts and age-appropriate testing
  • Fun eye movement games to assess tracking and alignment
  • Gentle evaluation of eye health
  • In a welcoming, playful environment, we use age-appropriate tools and games to check how your child’s vision is developing.
School-aged children (6–17)
Once kids enter school, visual demands increase fast: reading, screens, sports, and shifting focus from board to paper. Annual exams help catch refractive errors, binocular vision issues, and eye strain.

Signs your child may be struggling:

  • Short attention span
  • Headaches or eye strain
  • Frequent blinking or rubbing eyes
  • Avoiding reading or homework
  • Tilting the head to one side
  • Losing their place while reading
  • Double vision or trouble focusing
  • Poor reading comprehension

Failed a school vision screening?

If your child didn’t pass a school vision screening

Don’t worry, we’re here to help. School screenings are a great first step, but they’re limited. Most rely on a simple eye chart and mainly measure distance vision, which means they can miss eye strain, focusing problems, how well the eyes work together, or health concerns inside the eye.

That’s why a comprehensive follow-up exam is so important. We’ll evaluate whether glasses are needed, how well the eyes align and track, and the overall health of each eye. If additional support is needed, we’ll also discuss solutions beyond glasses, such as contact lenses, vision therapy, or myopia control if nearsightedness is progressing quickly.

Let’s look after your child’s eyes together

From the moment they first focus on your face to their success in school, good vision shapes their world. We combine gentle, kid-friendly care and state-of-the-art imaging to get a clear look at eye health stress free. We’ll explain everything in simple, reassuring terms so both children and parents feel confident every step of the way.
